Visit the hidden gem Pompeii

Pompeii is an ancient city that was buried under the ash of the Vesuvius volcanic eruption around 700 years BC. For centuries, excavations have been ongoing in the thick layers of ash that buried the city on August 24 and 25 in the year 79 AD. Today, a large part of the city has been uncovered, making Pompeii one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world.

Walking through the streets of Pompeii, you can feel transported back in time. Everywhere you look, there are remnants of how Pompeii must have appeared around 700 years BC. Due to the extensive burial under ash, many buildings and artifacts have been remarkably well-preserved. During a walk through Pompeii, you can see millstones and ovens from bakeries, medical instruments from a doctor, and iron objects from an iron dealer. There are also several bathhouses, and some of the erotic paintings and decorations on the walls have survived.

During the excavations, scientists discovered various hollow spaces in the ash layer. These spaces were formed by bodies buried under the ash that decomposed over the centuries. In these hollow spaces, they poured plaster to create casts of the people buried during the volcanic eruption. Particularly near the main gate of Pompeii, many hollow spaces were found, indicating that many people tried to flee the eruption.

Like all Roman cities, the forum serves as the center of Pompeii. Here, you can find a main temple flanked by two arches. Additionally, you’ll see remains of a speaker’s platform, the suggestus. In the southwest part of the city, near the city wall, you can find the amphitheater used for gladiator fights and battles with wild animals.
