Doria Pamphilj Galleria in Rome

In the heart of Rome, between Piazza della Rotonda, the square where the Pantheon is, and Piazza Venezia with the monumental Vittorio Emanuele II monument, you will find Palazzo Doria Pamphilj. This splendid city palace, also known as Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, houses one of Rome’s richest art collections. Visiting the Galleria Doria Pamphilj is an essential part of your trip to Rome.

Palazzo Doria Pamphilj

palace of the Doria family. The museum comprises ten magnificent rooms, including the throne room and the ballroom. Originally built for the prominent Pamphilj family, to which Pope Innocent X belonged, in the 18th century, after the family had no heirs, Pope Clement XII decided in 1763 to transfer all the property to the Doria family, on the condition that they reside in Rome. To this day, members of the Doria family still live in Rome, and the palace remains in their possession.

The modest facade of the building sharply contrasts with its stunningly rich interior. The walls are adorned with floor-to-ceiling gold leaf as far as the eye can see, housing many masterpieces by artists such as Raphael, Tintoretto, Titian, Caravaggio, and Velázquez. Multiple generations of the Doria family were avid art enthusiasts, filling the palace with exquisite paintings and other art objects.

Collection of Galleria Doria Pamphilj

The private collection of Galleria Doria Pamphilj is exceptional, boasting over four hundred prominent artworks from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. Among these are works by renowned Italian masters such as Tintoretto, Titian, Raphael, Correggio, Caravaggio, and Bernini. Virtually every wall in the museum is adorned from top to bottom with magnificent paintings. One of the most celebrated portraits ever made, Velázquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X, is also on display in the museum.

One of the most beautiful parts of the palace is undoubtedly the mirror gallery. While not as grand as the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles, this hall is equally stunning.
